Managing Partner: Rashid Salim Rashid

Mr. Rashid gained his LLB at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1992. He graduated with a Masters in International Law from the University of Minnesota in 1996. From 1996 to 1998 he worked at the firm of Doherty, Rumble & Butler in St Paul, Minnesota.

Mr. Rashid worked as a Prosecutor at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 1998 to 2008
prosecuting high level government and military leaders accused of having committed genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Rwanda in 1994. He worked as a case manager on the trial of Laurent Semanza and rose to the position of Trial Attorney on the 'Military 1' trial of Theoneste Bagosora, Anatole Nsengiyumva, Gratien Kabiligi and Aloys Ntabakuze. Mr. Rashid was also involved in the cases of, among others, Protais Mpiranya and Felicien Kabuga.

After resigning from the ICTR in 2008, Mr. Rashid co-founded Hamid & Rashid Attorneys in Zanzibar. He remained with the firm from 2008 until 2010, during which time he built a portfolio of corporate clients by injecting professionalism and efficiency in dispensing legal services on the island.

In 2010 the Office of the Prosecutor asked Mr. Rashid to return to the ICTR to assist in prosecuting the final cases. He worked on cases including those of Ildephonse Nizeyimana, Jean Uwinkindi and Augustin Ngirabatware until the completion of the final trial in August 2012.

In 2013 Mr. Rashid founded KNR Legal, based in Arusha, with the aim of providing effective, professional legal services for clients in northern Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Senior Partner: Wallace Kapaya

Mr Kapaya obtained his LLB from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1976, and a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Southampton in 1993. He was appointed resident magistrate in 1977 in the Tanzanian Judiciary. He rose through the ranks from Resident Magistrate to Senior Resident Magistrate, Principal Resident Magistrate until he was appointed District Registrar of the High Court of Songea in 1994. He became the District Registrar of the High Court of Arusha in 1997.

As senior magistrate and district registrar in the judiciary Mr Kapaya exercised original and appellate criminal and civil jurisdiction in the High Court of Tanzania and Resident Magistrates’ Courts, whereby he heard and determined criminal and civil cases and appeals. In addition, he was the administrator in-charge of a number of judicial and other staff, monitored the flow and disposal of cases, and supervised financial expenditure in his judicial zone

In July 1999 Mr Kapaya joined the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda as a Trial Attorney. In 2004 he was appointed Senior Trial Attorney and Senior Appeals Counsel in 2009, respectively. For 14 years his principal functions as Trial Attorney, Senior Trial Attorney and Senior Appeals Counsel were to prosecute high level government, political military and religious leaders suspected of having committed genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Rwanda in 1994. Cases he handled included the Prosecutor v Ignace Bagilishema, Prosecutor v Emmanuel Ndindabahizi, Prosecutor v Hormisdas Nsengimana, Prosecutor v Michel Bagaragaza, Prosecutor v Elizaphan and Gerard Ntakirutimana, Prosecutor v Michel Muhimana, and Prosecutor v Augustine
Ngirabatware.

Mr Kapaya retired from the ICTR in 2013 and in 2015 joined KNR Legal as a Senior Partner in order to provide high quality legal services to clients throughout Tanzania.
